Mustang Success Story: CherokeeCherokee3
by Sonja and Giovanna Green

Cherokee was born in the Calico Mountains of Nevada in 1998, he was born free and wild. He was captured in Dec. 2000 at the age of 2 and taken to a correctional facility on Canon City, Colorado. There is a " Wild Horse Program" there that allows prisoners to gentle wild horses and prepare them for their future owners.

Cherokee was bought and brought to Florida in 2001. Cherokee never had much handling after that, unfortunately he was placed in a pasture for 4 years with a few other mustangs, fed daily but that was the extent of it. Cherokees owner decided to move and rid herself of many of her adopted mustangs. Fortunately my aunt knew the owner and took Cherokee who was then given to me.

The first time I saw him he was full of rain rot at least one inch thick on his chest and face, his mane and tail were matted and he was so scared to even be touched that he shook like a leaf. Cherokee had forgotten much of what he had learned in the program so we slowly began building trust and respect.

Cherokee2We hired a wonderful trainer in 2005. She had never worked with a mustang before. It took 1 year of ground work before we attempted to introduce a saddle.  I was in no hurry and did not want to stress him in any way. After the year, we decided he was ready for the saddle , the trainer took him to her property ( I went weekly to check on his progress ) and after only 1 1/2 months I rode him for the first time.

Cherokee has been ridden almost daily ever since. My 11 year old daughter began riding him this year competing in both dressage and hunter jumper shows. Their first dressage show they took a 4th place ribbon and their first hunter jumper show they took  2nd, 4th, and 5th place ribbons. Cherokee is also a trustworthy trail riding companion for both my daughter and I.

Cherokee

Cherokee has been such a blessing to our family. He has taught us patience, respect, trust, and above all that if you work at it you can achieve anything with kindness and love. He is our big teddy bear and a permanent part of our family.

I would never get any other breed of horse. I am the proud owner of an "American Mustang".

Sincerely,

Sonja and Giovanna Green

WHR and the Black Hills Sanctuary
August 2008

Black Hills Sanctuary, S.D.Diane Delano, Director of WHR, recently coordinated the relocation of two special Mustangs,  "MaKali" (a WHR Rescue) and "Gypsy" (a HPAF rescue), from Florida to the Black Hills Sanctuary, S.D.

Some wild horses don't adapt well to domestic life. Fortunately, for these special horses, sanctuaries exist where they can live their lives in freedom, such as the Black Hills Sanctuary in South Dakota.

WHR would like to thank and acknowledge those who made it possible for "MaKali" and "Gypsy" to run free again!  The Black Hills Sanctuary for accepting these Mustangs into their sanctuary.  Morgan Silver, Director of the Horse Protection Association of Florida (HPAF)along with her sponsors, who donated funds towards the relocation.  Cindy and Jim Thompson, who transported the Mustangs cross-country to South Dakota. The Thompson's drove the Mustangs from Florida to the Black Hills, S.D. They were kind enough to share their photos of the Black Hills and horses. Amazing!

Volunteer Appreciation Day!
Volunteer Day1August 16th, 2008

WHR volunteers gathered together on Saturday for a luncheon and educational seminar.  It was a fun day, despite the rain, to meet new people, trade horse stories, and enjoy some good food.  It was great to see everyone again.

Thank you so much for all your help and support!
